Friend(lie)s, Romans, Countrymen...
Hope you are all well and are now well into the festive season. I am finally in the yuletide mode after my pre-Christmas visit to London (My God, isn't London expensive!) and found myself humming along to "The First Nowell" in the supermarket this morning. Only 9 working days left...Newsflash!!!! I am now a hooligan- bet you didn't see that one coming- after attending the fateful Spain-England friendly. At least that is what I understand from Spanish media who seem to put anyone who is English attending a football match in Spain into the same hooligan-sized basket. (Much in the same way as certain elements of the British media seem to put all the Spaniards in the racism basket).
On a political level Anglo-spanish relations don't seem to have been affected by this, as this week has seen the first reunions over Gibraltar to which the First Minister of Gibraltar has been invited. A step in the right direction...But then the question is what is the right direction. The Spanish say their long term goal is sovereignty and London says that it will not hand over sovereignty without the consent of the Gibraltarians (like that's gonna happen!!) so it all swings and roundabouts.
And to be honest, it's just a rock!!!
But back to London. For those of you expecting an all-out attack on the tube, etc I am afraid that I am going to dissappoint you except that the sooner 24-hour licencing come in the better. We were in a pub on Friday night and last orders were called at 10.30, and better than that on Saturday we wanted to have a quick pint before the party started and found a very nice place just behind Regent's St only to be refused entry because they were closing at 6 p.m!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I ask you, is that normal? The Friday one I can just about understand because it was near the City, and not much trade at the weekend, but in the middle of town three Saturdays before Christmas???????????????????????
PS I don't know if this made it into the pages of the Sun (not that you read the Sun), but did you hear the one about the Roman who's girlfriend is a porn star? Apparently a group of lads in Romewere having a party and decided to hire a porn film (as you do!). Anyway, to the the surprise of the host, one of the actresses in the film was his girlfriend, and (it get's better) one of the actors was his best friend who also happened to be at the party!! The guest reportedly burst out laughing and the host, not seeing the funny side of it, went into the kitchen, got a knife and proceeding to stab people. Oh well, when in Rome, ...
