Todo lo que empieza, se acaba!
Ciao tutti belli (sounds like a gravity-defying Italian icecream flavour!!)Last weekend we were in Rome, along with, or at least it seemed that way, half the tourists in Southern Europe and the odd Roman, most of whom had left town.
Rome is, as you would expect, a really fascinating place, if a bit old (asopposed to ancient.) What I mean by this is that the monuments are, well, monumental, but the more recent buildings (still talking 18th and 19th centuries, it's all relative!) were a bit tatty and in need of several coats of paint, which is a real shame as they are mostly very attractive buildings.
Apart from that it's all good, as they say.
San Peter's is vast, and the musei (bit of Italian for you there! masculine plural!) are inspiring, although it makes you think about the money the church has. All those Raphaels andMichaelangelos must be worth a bob or two. Not to mention the 12 euro entry!! (by, lets say, 1000 people on a good day...) But still, I've crossed offsomething else on the "Things to do before I can afford expensive holidays to the South Pacific" list.
On the culinary side, excellent icecream, apart from the 10 euro one in the Piazza di Spagna which wasn't really value for money!!!! It's amazing how much flavoured frozen milk one person can balance on a tiny cone. I'm sure Guinness has records for things like that! Does melt rather quickly though, which makesit somewhat difficult to savour the moment. Good pizza too. None of your deep-pan cheese-filled nonsense, neither.
Ave.
Back in Madrid it's hot, although not as hot as last year, which is no bad thing since the drought continues. What I hadn't realised is that the water they use to clean the streets on a daily basis does, in fact, come from the drinking supply. The system is, apparently, not in place to use recycled water, and it's just too expensive to bring it in by truck.
At least that's what the mayor says! (Shame about 2012- might just have cost him reelection!)
In the Real world, Woodgate is almost match-fit, but they still aren't sure where, or if, he'll play.
Oh and Dave's rumoured to be ready to sign until 2010. It seems that Posh is now happy in Spain!!
Still, I'm leaving in 10 days...
Hasta siempre amigos
